Unmistakeably impressive, Glen Canyon is one of the finest examples of a high-arch concrete dam in the world. That it was built, over considerable public protest, galvanizing a nascent environmental movement, is a tribute to the power of large growers, city supporters, and the energy interests of Southern California. The water impounded backs up just east of the beginning of Grand Canyon National Park, and there was talk, after the completion of Glen Canyon (and even before the building was done) of continuing with a stair-step of dams going down the Colorado all the way to the Mexican border. Those were stopped, although as environmentalist David Brower once commented, "no dam is ever dead, it's just delayed."
