A Berber village in the mgoun district of the High Atlas mountains. In early spring, snow is still fairly deep in the high peaks, which lie at elevations over 10,000'. This snow will provide plenty of water resources for their fields during the coming year. The village along the road is built of adobe. In this part of Morocco, large frames are constructed and earth mixed with straw is poured in, forming a wall when the frames are removed. Houses are quite well adapted to the site by this method: they can fit around the ups and downs of mountain topography and are also surprisingly warm in winter. The roofs are thatch. Much of the life of the house takes place on the roof, and like its courtyard cousin in the city house, a kind of porch open to the sun (and visible here as a row of pillars in the center of the image) is the setting for much family life. |
